What Do LED Downlights Cost to Install in Newcastle?
A standard LED downlight installed in an existing ceiling cavity in Newcastle is $85 to $130 per light, supply and install. Bulk discounts apply to larger jobs, and conversions from existing halogens cost less because the holes and wiring are already there.
What's in the Per-Light Price
- The LED downlight unit (warm white or cool white, dimmable or fixed)
- The driver / transformer
- Cutting the ceiling hole and mounting the light
- Wiring through to the existing switch loop
- Testing and compliance certification
What Costs More
- New runs, adding downlights where none existed, cable runs from the ceiling rose add labour
- Loose-fill insulation, has to be cleared back from each light by 50mm minimum (fire safety), adds time
- Tile or vaulted ceilings, trickier than standard plasterboard
- Dimmable circuits, need a matching LED-compatible dimmer at the wall
Halogen to LED Conversion
If you're converting an existing halogen layout to LED, the price drops significantly. $400 to $700 to convert ten lights is typical, around $50 per light when you're swapping like-for-like. The transformer and ceiling hole are already in place.
Why Convert
Halogens run hot (about 50W each, mostly heat), use 5 to 7 times more power than LEDs, last around 2,000 hours, and are a real fire risk in roof cavities. LEDs run cool, use 7 to 10W, and last 25,000+ hours.
The fire risk is the unsung benefit. Most house fires that originate in roof cavities trace back to halogen downlights and clearance issues with insulation. LEDs effectively eliminate this risk.
