Home Security Cameras Newcastle, What's Worth Paying For

📅 January 2026 ⏱ 5 min read ✍️ Nate's Rates Electrical, Newcastle NSW

Security cameras have gotten cheap and good in recent years, but there's a real gap between consumer wireless cameras and hardwired systems. If you want footage you can actually rely on, hardwired wins.

Why Hardwired Beats Wireless

The cheap consumer wireless cameras (Ring, Arlo, Reolink WiFi style) are easy to set up and great for renters. The downsides:

  • Batteries that go flat every few months
  • Wifi drops that mean missed events
  • Recurring cloud subscriptions ($10 to $20/month per camera, adds up fast)
  • Limited storage when offline
  • Heavily compressed cloud video, often not useful for ID

A hardwired PoE (Power-over-Ethernet) system runs power and data over a single Cat6 cable to each camera. The NVR (Network Video Recorder) stores everything locally on a hard drive. The system works whether or not your internet is up.

Resolution and Lens Choice

4K cameras are now standard in the mid-range. They give enough detail to read number plates at 4 to 6 metres and identify faces at 10 metres in good light.

  • Wide-angle (2.8 mm lens): great for general area coverage, front door, driveway
  • Narrower (4 mm or 6 mm): better when you want detail on one specific point, gate entry, front door at distance

Where to Point Them

Most useful angles for a Newcastle home:

  • Front door and driveway approach (one camera, often wide-angle)
  • Side gate or pathway
  • Backyard or rear access point
  • Garage or shed if it's separate from the house

Local Storage vs Cloud

A good NVR with 4 TB of storage holds 3 to 4 weeks of continuous 4K footage from four cameras. With motion-only recording you get many months. That's usually more than enough.

Cloud storage is useful as a backup (if someone steals the NVR, the footage isn't lost), but it isn't necessary for most homes.

💡 Setup tip: Whatever camera brand you go with, install one camera on the NVR itself (or use a separate camera with onboard SD storage) as a watchdog. If someone breaks in and grabs your NVR, you still have footage of them doing it from the second source.

Cost in Newcastle

A four-camera 4K hardwired PoE system, installed with the NVR and mobile app set up, is typically $1,200 to $2,000 supplied and installed. No ongoing subscription unless you want offsite backup.

Add cameras later as needed, each additional camera is around $150 to $250 supplied and installed if cable runs are accessible.
